Benefits

An in-depth course, combining remote learning and a 1 week laboratory experience. The personal study section of the programme provides the students with detailed theoretical knowledge of the diamond pipeline. The following 1 week laboratory experience develops the practical skills required to accurately assess the 4Cs, and students will be assessed during the practical examination at the end of the week.

Features

  • The theoretical part of the course will be completed through distance learning. For the laboratory experience, the number of attendants for each sessions are kept low to ensure the best possible learning experience.

  • The theoretical part of the course is textbooks based. The textbooks cover detailed diamond theory and prepare students to complete online assessments, provided at the end of each book.

  • The 1-week laboratory experience aims to put the theoretical knowledge in context by giving the students the chance to work on carefully selected polished diamonds from the De Beers Group.

  • The experience will include exposure to the specially designed ‘Grader Aider’ technology, developed by the De Beers Group.

Modules Covered in the Polished Diamond Grading Course textbooks

  • 1. Diamonds are forever

This first section will provide an introduction to the diamonds and an overview of the diamond pipeline.

  • 2. Theoretical Essentials

This section explores the unique optical and physical properties of diamonds. What are they and how do they relate to diamond grading specifically?

  • 3. Practical Basics

This module explores the equipment gemmologists and diamond professionals use to grade diamonds, highlighting how there is specific equipment for each of the value factors.

  • 4. The 4C's

An introduction to the 4Cs, so that you are prepared as later textbooks go into a greater level of detail on each of them.

  • 5. Carat Weight

Carat weight is possibly the easier to understand of the 4Cs. This textbook offers more insights to help you explain this characteristic to customers.

  • 6. Clarity Grading

This section of the course will teach you about clarity features, and their impact on a diamond's clarity grade or help to distinguish between natural diamonds from synthetic diamonds and simulants.

  • 7. Colour Grading

Learn how to assess the colour of diamonds - relate its complexities within a sales presentation or in conversation with other diamond professionals.

  • 8. Fluorescence Grading

In this module, you will learn about the fluorescence occurrence and its grading process.

  • 9. Cut Grading

A deep-dive into the core aspects of Cut, using the Institute of Diamonds Grading Standards.

  • 10. Fancy Shape Grading

This module details the grading process for standard fancy shapes.

  • 11. Elements of rarity, beauty and value

Rarity, beauty and value: three key elements to create a desire for diamonds in our customers. In this module we also look at how the industry strives to maintain customer confidence across the diamond pipeline.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I work full-time and can only study in my spare time, how long will it take me to finish the textbooks and assessments?

Although everyone works at a different pace, we think that each textbook and associated online tests will take you on average 3 hours to complete and all of the books could be completed in an estimated time frame of 4 months. You can study for longer as needed, but it’s important that you are comfortable with this in-depth knowledge, to get the best from the 1 week laboratory class.

  • I don’t live near one of the De Beers Group Institute of Diamonds facilities where the 1-week laboratory based portion of the course is held, does this mean I cannot attend?

Even though we typically hold the 1-week laboratory based portion of the course in one of our facilities in the UK, Antwerp or Surat, we also offer the course in other locations (where demand is present) to ensure all can have the opportunity to attend. Please get in contact to discuss in more detail the prospect of delivering a course closer to you.

  • Once I have completed all aspects of this course, will I be able to grade and sort polished diamonds at a professional level?

This course is designed to take students deeper into the world of polished diamonds and diamond grading, and explore how a wide range of characteristics and processes go into creating a polished diamond. At the end of the course they should feel confident in identifying a diamonds colour and clarity characteristics, as well as make determinations on cut and carat weight. However to be truly confident with grading polished diamonds, takes years of hands on experience.

  • What do I need to bring to the 1 week laboratory course?

Joining instructions will detail which of the study books you need to bring to the laboratory course. Any additional material will be handed out as required, this includes all gemmological equipment.
